Lexical and syntactic complexity of narrative English texts for children versus for adults: computational and corpus-based approaches to a comparison
The paper compares aspects of lexical and syntactic complexity in the SCETCH and FLOWN corpora on the basis of the computational tools and methods developed and discussed by Lu (2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014). Basic statistical tests and Linear Discriminant Analysis are applied to data obtained from employing these tools and methods, and statistical graphics visualising the results of statistical computations on the data are displayed. SCETCH and FLOWN are thus shown to be statistically quite distinct with respect to some lexical and syntactic complexity indices, but not others.
